New Power Soccer Club in Kildare
October 23rd, 2008. In: CPSI
Kildare Sports Partnership in conjunction with the FAI is setting up a power soccer club in County Kildare.
Power Soccer is an action-packed team sport combining the skills of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair itself to create an extremely challenging game very similar to soccer. Power Soccer is a competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users Two teams of four power chair users each attack, defend, and play the specially designed soccer ball, 18 inches in diameter, in an attempt to score . The ball is controlled and directed by plastic formed soccer guards mounted on the front of each player’s wheelchair. The teams are mixed with male and female athletes.
The club will run on a weekly basis with training provided by the Kildare FAI development officers on regular basis. Anyone who uses a power wheelchair is eligible to play. All ages are encouraged to participate. There are many benefits to participating in Power Soccer such as
§ Participation in a team sport that combines strategy, power, and quickness
§ Increased cardiovascular endurance
§ Increased upper-body strength
§ Increased mobility skills
§ Social benefits
There is an upcoming Power Soccer taster day taking place in Maynooth University Sports Hall on Saturday 1st November from 12.00 – 2.00pm with training provided by FAI development officers . The Power Soccer club will come as a result from the interest at the taster day. For this reason anyone interested in Power Soccer should contact me to register for the event.
