Irish Cerebral Palsy Soccer Squad Triumph in Barcelona Invitational
June 16th, 2009. In: Soccer
We left the Clarion Hotel on Friday the 5th June at 4.30am to catch
our flight at 6am, I was a little concerned about the early departure
as we had to play Spain at 5pm that same evening. The game started, and as
I thought the players had a sluggish start, I put down to travel and the
early start. Leading 2-1 at half time I needed to change a few things
after the Interval. We got it together in the second half winning 7-2
in the end. A hat-trick from the old man Finbarr O’Riordan two from
Gary Messett and two from Luke Evans.
Early night for the boys in preparation for Holland next morning.
Any game against Holland is a battle and this was no exception. They
brought their Under 21 squad and we had our work cut out to break
them down. Gary Messett scored our three goals and we won this game 3-0.
Finland on the Sunday morning were no match for the hunger our lads
showed in wanting to win this tournament. Gary with 2 goals, Luke with
1, Finbarr with 2 and Joe Markey with 1 meant we comprehensively won
the game 6-1.
Another nice Cup to bring home and winners medals for a
nice change. Best part of the trip was the introduction of 4 new
players from our Development squad got a great experience of playing
on the big stage and all played a part in each of the 3
games.
Congratulations must go to Dara Snell and Jordan Kearns from
Belfast who were excellent and to Gary Messett for once again
winning Player of the Tournament.
