Ireland one step away from Paralympic World Cup Final

Ireland’s Derek Malone

Ireland’s Cerebral Palsy Football Team today took a giant step towards qualification for the final of the Paralympic World Cup with a classy 5:2 victory over the USA.

Fresh from the thrilling drawn game with the Netherlands yesterday, the Irish took the game to the Americans and took an early lead with two goals from Bray’s Gary Messett. The Irish piled on the pressure scoring a further three goals, one from Galway’s Jason Moran and two from Clare’s Derek Malone.

Malone’s two goals were extremely significant as the Paralympic World Cup marks his first competitive outing following the debacle of his removal from the Beijing 2008 Games in a major classification row.

While the Republic of Ireland only needs one point from tomorrow’s game in order to qualify for the gold medal match, they will be acutely aware that the host nation GB requires a full three points if their hopes of a final appearance are to stay alive.

In today’s other game, the Netherlands defeated Great Britain by 3:1.
