Boccia: Ireland finish out of the medals but well on their way to London 2012
June 4th, 2010. In: BocciaIn a frustrating day at the World Boccia Championships in Lisbon, the Irish BC1/BC2 Boccia Team of Padraic Moran, Roberta Connolly, Tom Leahy and Jason Kearney ended the day in the dreaded 4th place following defeat to Spain in the bronze medal play-off match by a score of 10:5.
The day started very promising for Ireland with a tight 6:5 victory over the fancied Hong Kong team in the quarter-finals. The Irish then struggled against the team from Thailand and went down by a score of 10:4.
While the team were disappointed to finish out of the medals, their place at the London 2012 Paralympic Games now looks increasingly secure with the ranking points accrued from this event and the 4th place finish they had at the 2009 European Boccia Championships. One hopes that the Team will go one step further at the next major Championships in 2011 which takes place in Belfast.
With the Team and Pair competitions now complete, the focus now turns to the individual events which commence tomorrow.
