On a day of contrasting fortunes for Team Ireland at the CP-ISRA World Boccia Championships, the Irish ended the day on a high by knocking the pre tournament favourites and hosts Portugal out at the last 16 stage in Lisbon.

The Irish BC1/BC2 Team, captained by Bray’s Padraic Moran along with Bobbie Connolly (Dublin), Tom Leahy (Cork) and Jason Kearney (Dublin), opened up a sizeable lead after three ends with the score lying 7:0. The Portuguese fought back to be 7:4 behind with one remaining end. Thankfully the Irish held out for a famous 7;6 victory and proceed to a quarter-final match against Hong Kong tomorrow morning.

Earlier in the day the Irish BC1/BC2 Team secured 1st place in Pool E with a steady 8:5 win over Australia.

The day started brightly for Ireland’s BC3 Pair of John Cronin, Gerard O’Grady and Jennifer Garde, with a vital 7:3 win in their final Pool F fixture against Sweden to secure a last 16 berth. Unfortunately, the BC3 Pair couldn’t topple the Thailand pair and went down 4:1. The BC3 players will rest tomorrow in preparation for the BC3 Mixed Individual competition which commences on Saturday.
