Paralympic Council of Ireland Announces Irish Team for 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships



The Paralympic Council of Ireland today officially announced the Irish team for the 2010 IPC World Swimming Championships. Eight Irish swimmers will represent Ireland at the forthcoming Championships, to be held in Eindhoven, Holland from 15th – 25th August, 2010.

The team will be led by Head of Paralympic Swimming Dave Malone and comprises eight new and experienced athletes, four of whom competed at last years European Championships in Iceland and includes Beijing 2008 Paralympic Finalist, Ellen Keane. Speaking on the team announcement Team Manager, Dave Malone said: “I have been working with the athletes for towards the World Championships since my appointment as Head of Paralympic Swimming over a year ago. They have worked very hard over the last year and this is a group of very talented performers. Eindhoven is the perfect showcase opportunity for them to display their talent.”

Commenting on the announcement, Paralympic Council of Ireland CEO, Mr. Liam Harbison, said: “The World Championships is another milestone for our swimmers on the road to London 2012. After their success last year in the European Championships, we are very hopeful they will build on this success and we wish them every success.”

The Irish team comprises eight athletes, across a range of disability groups, who will compete in the following events:

Matthew Bell, Newtownards, Co. Down

S14/SB14 Class – 100m Backstroke, 100m Breaststroke, 200m Freestyle

Stephen Campbell, Cookstown, Co. Tyrone

S11 Class – 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 400m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke & 100m Butterfly

Jonathan Cummings, Coalisland, Co. Tyrone

S6/SB5 Class – 100m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke & 100m Backstroke

James Hamilton, Ballyclare, Co. Antrim

S14/SB14 Class – 100m Backstroke, 100m Breaststroke, 200m Freestyle

Ellen Keane , Clontarf, Dublin,

S9/SB8/SM9 Class - 100m Breaststroke, 100m Butterfly & 200m Individual Medley

Gina Lourens , (Resident South Africa),

S8 Class – 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 400m Freestyle & 5km Open Water

Jonathan McGrath , Killaloe, Co. Clare

S8 Class – 400m Freestyle

James Scully, Ratoath, Co. Meath

S5 Class – 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle & 200m Freestyle
