Ireland’s Michael McKillop avoids the snow - Training in South Africa for the upcoming IPC Athletics World Championships


Ireland’s Michael McKillop; a Beijing Paralympic Games gold medalist in the T37 800m, is currently training amongst a group of leading International athletes in South Africa ahead of the IPC Athletics World Championships, which get underway in Christchurch, New Zealand on January 30th 2011.

Michael is currently living at the high performance centre in Potchefstroom with full access to all the necessary facilities to maximise performance, and training including track (grass and tartan), trail runs, weights, ice baths, physiotheraphy and medical support and so on.

Potchefstroom is a University town of about 250 000 people, about 120km or 75 miles to the South West of Johannesburg.It is also known as the “Home of Sport in the North West Province”. The town has already become home-away-from-home to many international athletes from many different countries and sports. Potchefstroom and its high performance facilities hosted the winning World up soccer team, Spain in 2010.

Michael will continue his training block in South Africa right up until  Christmas week. He will then return home and the Irish team will depart on January 13th for the World Championships.
