New Home for Wheelchair Sports in Limerick
February 22nd, 2011. In: CPSIWhere: Delta Soccer Dome, Delta Retail Park, Ballysimon Road, Limerick
When: Every Thursday night from 7-9pm
What: A one-stop-shop for wheelchair sports in Limerick,
Club participants will eventually be offered up to 5 hours of wheelchair
sports per week such as wheelchair hurling, basketball, tennis, rugby
league, boccia and athletics plus social nights. This club will be run by
the club members supported by the sports bodies such as IWA Sports, GAA,RLI
and local clubs such as Limerick Lawn Tennis Club.
Who: This club would be open to any body with a physical
disability and would not depend on being linked to a service. We will aim to
have actives for all ages and abilities. Sports chairs can be provided on
request.
Why: The Limerick City and County Sports Partnerships
have recently helped run a number of wheelchair sports in conjunction with
sports bodies such as the GAA,IWA Sports, Rugby League Ireland and local
clubs such as Limerick Lawn Tennis Club. Through the Sports Inclusion
Disability Officer (SIDO) programme we have received feedback from
participants and parents that there is a lack of coordination of these
programmes.
We have therefore taken on the role to pilot a timetable of wheelchair
sports activities under the banner of one wheelchair sports club; this will
be a one-stop-shop for wheelchair sports in Limerick. The “Wheels in Motion”
Club is currently up and running and would be willing to expand the club to
bring in new activities and members. By having one club it will help to
coordinate all these programmes while maximising the use of resources,
volunteer recruitment and funding.
The Wheels in Motion Club will, hopefully, alleviate the pressure caused by
having a number of different sports in various locations and times. The vast
majority of the activities will be in the one set location at the same time
every week. The sports provision being offered will change depending on the
demands of the club members and ONLY the club members.
If you have any further questions or you would like to discuss this matter,
please do not hesitate to contact us. Please feel free to forward this
information or poster attached to any person you think would be
interested.
Please remember sport just does not happen, it needs to be supported ! We
need you to support this club at the early stages right now to get up and
going. This is your opportunity to get involved in a new wheelchair sports
club and see it run the way you want it !
